My Life in Ruins Part 2 - Chorazin

On November 29, 2012, our tour group visited the ruins in Chorazin and then in Capernaum. These two cities, along with Bethsaida, were all cursed by Jesus for their unbelief and lack of repentance. Most of his miracles had been performed in these three cities, yet the people in general did not repent.

As you can see in the Google Earth photo above, Chorazin is northwest of Capernaum--about 6 miles by bus.  Chorazin is also spelled Chorizin, Chorazim, Korizin, Korazim, etc.

In Chorazin we visited the remains of a synagogue made of black basalt, a volcanic rock found in the area. It was built in the 3rd century AD, was destroyed in the 4th century and then rebuilt in the 6th century.

One of the walls of the ancient synagogue...Jesus traveled from town to town in the area around the northeast side of the Sea of Galilee, where his practice was to speak in the synagogue as a guest rabbi. Even though the actual synagogue where he spoke no longer exists, the remains of the 6th century synagogue are similar to one in which he spoke.

Pastor Jay is talking about the synagogue and about Jesus.

This is a corner of the ancient synagogue

This is called the Moses seat, where a visiting rabbi would sit.

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day, But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.” (Jesus, in Matthew 11: 21-24)

Archaeologists have not yet found a Chorazin settlement dating to the first century; thus my conclusion is that Chorazin of Jesus’ time was completely destroyed.

What a beautiful and educational trip you took. I love how deep you can dig yourself into history and really feel what it was years ago.
